A spokesman of the Police Department said here today that the State Government, in exercise of its powers under the rules, on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, 2022, on the good conduct and behavior of the prisoners, special punishment to the prisoners serving in various jails of the State. Apology has been announced.
He said that, including those sentenced to life imprisonment, those who have been sentenced to imprisonment for more than 10 years would be given 3 months, more than five years and a prisoner sentenced to imprisonment of up to ten years would be given 2 months, three 45 days to a prisoner sentenced with imprisonment for a term exceeding one year and up to five years, 30 days to a prisoner sentenced with imprisonment of more than one year and up to five years and 15 days to a prisoner sentenced to imprisonment of more than three months and up to a year. Special relief announced.
The spokesman said that 363 convicted prisoners lodged in various jails of the state would be benefited from the relief given by the government, out of which one prisoner would be released from jail on August 15, 2022 after completion of sentence.
Apart from this, it has been decided by the Government of India to celebrate the Amrit Mahotsav of Azadi as a series of programs to commemorate the 75th anniversary of independence. As part of the ceremony, it is proposed to grant special amnesty to certain categories of prisoners and release them in three phases – 15 August 2022, 26 January 2023 and again on 15 August 2023.
The spokesman said that as per the guidelines issued by the Government of India, out of the eligible prisoners who have completed 66 percent of their sentences, four prisoners are being released. A prisoner who has completed his sentence of imprisonment but is unable to pay his fine, that prisoner is also being released. With this relief, a total of five prisoners are being released from various jails of the state in the first phase.
He said that the scheme of remission is aimed at ensuring discipline and good conduct during imprisonment among the prisoners and as an incentive to provide an opportunity for the possibility of early release from jail. This will encourage them to leave the life of crime and become responsible citizens of the country.
